La Bush was jarenlang verdwenen in totale mysterieuze stilte, ditmaal toch korter dan voorheen. Tussen de albums The Red Shoes en Aerial zat 12 jaar. Tussen Aerial en haar nieuwe album Director’s Cut slechts 6 jaar. Stilletjesaan onthulde Kate Bush steeds meer over haar plannen… Zo was er een fragment te beluisteren op youtube. Ik moest absoluut wennen. Het deed mij haast denken dat mevrouw flink aan de drugs zat en flessen alcohol achterover had geslagen tijdens het maken van het nummer. Schrik voor het aankomende album, het zal toch niet?!
Het is bekend dat Kate Bush ontevreden was over de producties van haar albums The Sensual World (1989) en The Red Shoes (1993). Op Director’s Cut bewerkt Kate Bush een elftal tracks van haar albums The Sensual World en The Red Shoes. Daarvoor neemt ze geen halve maatregelen: Complete partijen zijn opnieuw ingespeeld, ingezongen, van nieuwe teksten voorzien en opnieuw gearrangeerd. Ze krijgt hierbij steun van onder andere Eric Clapton, Nigel Kennedy, Gary Brooker, Steve Gadd en Mica Paris. Dat levert zoveel sensationeels op dat we met recht van een geheel nieuw Kate Bush album mogen spreken, horen is geloven!
Director’s Cut zal worden uitgebracht in verschillende uitvoeringen: een gewone CD in digipack met boekje, een Deluxe CD (3 CD verpakking, inclusief Director’s Cut, The Sensual Word en een ge-remasterde versie van The Red Shoes) in een gebonden boek versie, een dubbel vinyl uitvoering en ook digitaal.
Director’s Cut wordt het begin van een mooie Kate Bush periode, ze zit op dit moment alweer in de studio voor nieuwe opnamen en er gaan geruchten over een tournee! Wanneer nieuw werk zal verschijnen kun je nooit bij Kate Bush zeggen. Maar wanneer Kate Bush iets nieuws uitbrengt is dat sowieso bijzonder. Want de keren dat ze met iets nieuws komt is bij Kate Bush natuurlijk zeldzaam.
Ik vind het een uiterst interessant album. Ze geeft een andere kijk op muziek die je al kent.
Originally when I wrote the song “The Sensual World” I had used text from the end of Ulysses by James Joyce, put to a piece of music I had written. When I asked for permission to use the text I was refused, which was disappointing. I then wrote my own lyrics for the song although I felt that the original idea had been more interesting. Well, I’m not James Joyce am I? When I came to work on this project I thought I would ask for permission again and this time they said yes. It is now re-titled “Flower Of the Mountain” and I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfill the original concept.
All the lead vocals and drums on Director’s Cut are new performances, some of the tracks featuring guests including Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and, on backing vocals, Mica Paris. Three songs have been completely re-recorded, including “This Woman’s Work”.
For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit tracks from these two albums and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them. Lots of work had gone into the two original albums and now these songs have another layer of work woven into their fabric. I think of this as a new album.
